ANNUAL BARBEQUE WEEKEND
|
|
|
|
| The Venue | Tonys Bouncy Castle | Cheeky Mikey with Sarah |
Background
What started back in 2001, as a small BBQ in Murphy's back garden
to throw a party for our dancers has now grown to over 200 friends
and acquaintances attending from all over the Country lasting
several days. We counted 65 tents in the garden last summer and,
in addition, we now hire the field next door to take all the
cars.
Murphy very generously opens up his house to us all every August and a tremendous amount of work goes into preparing for this rather unique event. Please note that this is not an official "dance weekend", more a social gathering for dancers. We hope you'll understand that we cannot accept children or pets.
We are able to keep the cost of your ticket to a minimum thanks
to the help of volunteers with the laying of the dance flooring,
marquees, etc. leading up to the BBQ, plus the food preparation,
and our own catering on the day. For it to continue to be a success,
additional help is always appreciated, so please let us know
if you are willing to assist in any way, say for an hour, so
we all get to enjoy the weekend.
Itinerary
Thursday
Special Class Night at our venue at Indian Queens on the Thursday
(from 8 to 11.15 pm) with guest instructor, Kevin Hardy, who
has been a stalwart of the BBQ since we started, a man of many
talents, dance teacher, electrician, mechanic, chief cook and
bottle washer, (a good catch girls!)
Friday
Dance at our Indian Queens venue with a short intermediate lesson
given by our guest instructors at 9 pm. At midnight, many campers
will head back to Murphy's for a little late night partying and
be ready for the day of the BBQ.
Saturday/Sunday - BBQ
Saturday morning - The fun starts with many people helping out with the final food preparations or erecting tents as more people arrive. Dance music will be playing, games on the lawn, i.e. table tennis, boules, badminton, etc, and others may stroll down to the waterfront or walk into Flushing for a pub lunch or a trip on the ferry across to Falmouth.
Saturday afternoon - Our guest instructors will be at the BBQ with impromptu workshops in the Marquee or the "Blues Room" and there will be various dance areas to freestyle.
Saturday night - BBQ food and buffet from 6 pm will be served by our "Celebrity Chefs" from Plymouth Jive Club. Impromptu Cabarets and lots of fun. Hot Chilli & Rice at midnight. Dancing finishes at 1 am outside but will continue inside the house until 3 am.
Sunday - For those who don't have to rush off, the party continues at a more leisurely pace with a chance to swop music, dance moves, and look at those photos from the night before!
Music
Amongst our DJs will be, as always, Gary Marsden from Riviera
Le Roc, Taunton, with a separate room for "blues" music.
Food
Included with your ticket is the BBQ, plus buffet and vegetarian
options, available from 6 pm followed by chilli & rice at
midnight. For the campers, we fire up the BBQ again Sunday morning
for bacon & eggs!
Drink
Please bring your own drinks and glasses or mugs as only paper
or plastic cups will be provided. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate,
etc will be available from the catering area at the side of the
house where there is also a large kitchen sink with hot and cold
water for washing up.
You may also like to bring a picnic chair.
Toilets & Showers
There are two bathrooms and two showers inside the house and
two port-a-loos outside so be prepared to queue. Hose pipe in
the garage for the men!
Camping
There is room for everyone to camp on Murphy's lawn provided
all tents are erected as close together as possible. Murphy will
be around to help squeeze you in! We do ask PLEASE not to bring
huge tents and try to share with friends, if possible. If you
want to just bring a sleeping bag and airbed, there will be room
in the marquee when the dancing outside finishes at 1 am.
Bed & Breakfast
We do have a small list of B & Bs in the area for those who
prefer a little more comfort but you will need to book early
as its Falmouth Regatta Week. Please ask us for details or contact
Falmouth Tourist Information: http://www.cornwalls.co.uk/tourist_information/in-Falmouth.htm.
Parking
NO parking whatsoever in the garden on BBQ day. For those erecting
tents on the day, we ask you to unload your car as quickly as
possible. There is ample free parking in the adjacent field which
the farmer kindly allows us to use. Please treat the farmer's
field with respect as without it the BBQ could not be held!
